Veterans Plaza comes to life

There is a proposed “Flag and Veterans Plaza” being planned for Jubilee Park by the Parks & Rec Commission.
“We hope to have our concept built and ready by Veterans Day,” said Parks & Rec Commission member Roger Brandt. There is a dedication planned for Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.
A large flag pole will be donated by the American Legion Glenn Morrison Post 70 and the plaza will be lighted.
Brandt developed a drawing that shows there would be four monuments built in front of the pavilion by the large flagpole that include an AWS Skywatch Historic Marker, WWI Barracks Monument, American Legion Monument and an Illinois Valley Veteran Services Organizations Historic Marker.
Brandt also explained that there will be two ways that the community can support and honor veterans at the proposed plaza. There will be flag sponsor pavestones installed at the flagpole plaza and star sponsors pavestones installed at the beginning of the fundraising walkway for local youth programs (gives local youth groups a way to permanently recognize volunteers, sponsors and donors who support their programs).
“This program is expected to help raise funds for youth programs for the next ten years,” wrote Brandt on his layout.
Cave Junction City Councilor Tina Casey Jones spoke at the city council meeting Oct. 9 and said, “The Air National Guard from Kingsley AirField will be doing a flyover at the time of the dedication.” Jones also mentioned that House Rep. Cliff Bentz donated a flag for the American Legion flagpole and that Pacific Power will help move the pole from the American Legion location to Jubilee Park.
Jones said she is interested in purchasing a paver in honor of her husband and that the pavers will be sold for between $120 and $280 depending on the size and shape of the blocks and added, “Richard Milner will be there serving lunch for people.”
