Dont eat meat
November is National Diabetes Month, a fitting time to eat vegan foods to help prevent diabetes, which can lead to blindness, heart and kidney problems, nerve damage, dementia, and more. One recent study showed that eating legumes instead of meat helps reduce one’s risk of the disease, prevents weight gain, and lowers bad cholesterol levels.
Many other studies, including one where researchers analyzed data from 31 studies across 20 countries, also suggest that eating meat increases one’s chances of developing diabetes. Research also shows that consuming just one egg a day can raise the risk of developing diabetes by a whopping 60%.
By contrast, an analysis of 37 studies found that the largest health benefits come from swapping animal-derived foods for vegan foods. So, if you want to reduce your risk of diabetes, not to mention help animals and protect the environment, go vegan. Vegan foods are rich in antioxidants and can combat inflammation and improve one’s blood sugar levels. For more information and a free vegan starter kit, see PETA.org.
