As Josephine County gears up for fee increases, residents may need to prepare for changes that could impact their wallets starting in 2026. The Josephine County Board of Commissioners recently initiated discussions on various proposed fee hikes across different departments, indicating a critical step in addressing the county’s financial landscape.
A mixture of factors is prompting this review. One among them the significant decrease in revenue experienced by the county’s surveyor’s office, which has dropped nearly 50% since 2021. This decline is largely attributed to the challenging economic climate and the current state of the housing market. With public services continuously requiring funding to meet operational needs, the county’s budgetary constraints necessitate this review of fees.
The proposed increases cover a wide range of services, reflecting the efforts to align costs with actual expenses. Public hearings are scheduled for early October and mid-November, offering residents a platform to voice their opinions and feedback regarding these changes.
Among the proposed increases, fees for public records requests are set to rise significantly. For clerical staff assistance, the fee would escalate from $33 per hour to $50, representing a 51% increase. Meanwhile, charges for professional staff would rise from $57 to $87.71 per hour, with legal staff fees jumping to $113.14 from $57 per hour. These changes aim to recover costs associated with service provision, which have intensified in recent years.
In addition to records requests, fees associated with local parks and recreation facilities are also slated for hikes. The day-use parking fee for cars is proposed to go from $5 to $10, effectively doubling the cost for visitors. A similar increase is proposed for bus parking, which would rise from $20 to $30. The annual affixed parking pass, aimed at frequent park users, would see an increase from $30 to $35.
Camping enthusiasts and fair vendors are also likely to notice differences in their fees. For example, the cost of a standard 10×10 booth at the county fair would increase from $225 to $275, while corner booths would rise from $325 to $375. Furthermore, larger booth spaces would see similar increases, ensuring that vendors can meet the financial demands of participating in county events.
Lastly, animal shelter fees and public health services will also take effect. These incremental increases reflect ongoing expenditures in maintaining public welfare standards and providing care for stray and surrendered animals.
As these proposals progress, residents are encouraged to stay informed and participate in public hearings. Community input will be a crucial element in determining the final decisions on these fee increases. Ultimately, while the changes may represent a financial adjustment for many, the commissioners claim they are aimed at securing the quality and sustainability of county services now and in the future.
