What Is God Like?
Some young children were asked, What is God like? One said, “He is very, very old with lots of gray hair and a beard.” One boy described God as being “Big as a tree.” One girl said, “He sits on a throne and scowls as He looks down on us to see if we are doing anything bad.”
What is your view of God? It is important to get a true picture. Many think He watches us carefully to see our mistakes, then sends judgments to punish us, enjoying tormenting us. To them, God is like a cop who wants to write more tickets. They believe in God but they are afraid of Him.
Others take the opposite view. They think that God is so nice that He will never punish anyone for anything. They say He will throw open the gates of heaven to all, no matter what kind of character they have. According to this view, your next-door neighbor in heaven may be Hitler or worse.
The good news is that God is not like either of these extremes. He is trustworthy. He provides for our our needs. He is patient. He is kind. He loves us, but not to the point of allowing us to destroy ourselves. He is fair and balanced. Most importantly, His love reaches to the saddest cases.
Moses wrote, “The Lord is the Rock, and his work is perfect.
Yes, all his ways are right!
God is true and faithful.
He is good and honest” (Deuteronomy 32:4, 5).
If His work is perfect, that means He is totally fair and balanced. He cares. He loves. He protects.
Have you given Him your heart?
Give God a chance. You may find He is more interesting than you thought.
