A big turnout of parents and their children showed up to play together at the 530 E. River Street Gardens fundraiser May 4 (at the former city pool outdoor area).
It was a beautiful sunny day at the gardens where all of the plants, flowers and trees were planted by children with the guidance of teachers and parents. There was a meal to share, music to hear and fun activities like the Maypole Ribbon Dance and playing in the stream.
The gardens are open to the public, so if you missed this fundraiser you can walk through the turnstile entrance and take a peak. Each Saturday, from noon to 2 p.m. you can stop by to volunteer in the garden. During the hot summer months the time may change to 9 – 11 a.m.
Garden activities include: free garden play, art projects, garden tasks, bike riding, basketball and more.
“The stream running through the gardens was constructed by the I.V. Soil and Water Conservation District and the kids planted willows around it,” said garden project manager Joe Flaherty, who also pointed out the choke cherry and ash trees that were planted near the stream to keep it cool.
In the garden area, you could find many vegetables growing in raised beds and rows of plants were lined up to be planted that were donated by caring community members. Also on the outdoor grounds you can find a natural log playground for the children to explore. This is truly another Valley gem created by loving community members.
In order to keep this outdoor gem shining, the nonprofit needs your help with funds. Please donate to the Gardens’ GoFundMe or make a check for the Garden to: I.V. Family Coalition, 535 E. River St, OR 97523. For questions contact garden teacher Charlotte Gill at 541-291-7743.
