Barnett backstabs library, reneges on pledge not to evict library

Grants Pass, OR – In a stunning reversal, Josephine County is reportedly making plans to evict the Grants Pass library from its long-held location, despite earlier assurances from Commissioner Chris Barnett.
This unexpected move follows the cancellation of a scheduled meeting between county officials and library leadership, with no reschedule in sight and no direct response to the library district’s lease renewal proposal submitted on March 25, 2025.
According to County Legal Counsel Wally Hicks, the county is unable to answer the library’s proposal due to uncertainties about departmental relocations and the potential sale of the Dimmick campus property.
This explanation has left many questioning the county’s priorities, especially given the library’s essential role in the community and the $500,000 in improvements it has made to the building since 2009. While the county has other available properties, officials have not clarified why eviction is being considered.
The library foundation has already purchased land for a new main branch, but requires $26 million for construction, making a continued presence in their current location essential for maintaining services during this transitional period.
The situation has raised concerns about the county’s commitment to supporting the library, particularly as stipulated in the County Charter. Library officials emphasize their desire for open communication and a transparent public discussion about the future of the Grants Pass library branch
The community is encouraged to contact the County Commissioners.
