The free event put on by Spiral Living Center was a great success. A large group of people showed up to learn about gardening and planting and then went home with seeds, plant starts and even young trees.
Many other organizations participated in the event: The Illinois Valley Garden Club, Cave Junction Farmers’ Market, Three Rivers Community Seed Library from the Grants Pass Garden Club that is in cooperation with the Josephine County Community Library and more!
The Seed Library offered free seeds for vegetables, fruits and flowers in exchange for signing up to be on their email newsletter list. On their information sheet it said, “Growing plants from seed is a gift to yourself and your family. The seeds you save and return are a gift to your community.”
With these uncertain financial times and the high cost of food, Rachel from the Spiral Living Center is encouraging people to grow extra food this year. “Plan and grow extra in your garden to help your community have access to fresh produce.”
Also, if you are a landowner in the Illinois Valley and would like help growing a garden on your property, consider partnering with the Spiral Living Center. You can contact Rachel at rachel@spirlliving.org.
If you have an abundance of fruit or vegetables that need to be harvested this summer or fall, and need some help with the harvest, please call the Gleaning Project. You can keep a fourth of the harvest and the rest will be distributed to those in need by the SLC. Call Meredith Hunt at 541-787-1183.
