Friends of the Library Rally to Warn Joco board, ‘We’re Watching’

The Grants Pass Friends of the Library held an “Eyeball Rally” to remind Josephine County commissioners that library supporters are paying attention to the proposed outlandish increase in the library’s rent. The rally was held during the time that would have been the negotiation meeting between commissioners and library leadership March 13 at the Anne Basker Auditorium in Grants Pass.
Rally-goers brought signs with eyes or messages of support for the library.
County commissioners terminated the library’s lease Jan. 6, 2025, with only 30 days’ notice, though the lease was not scheduled to expire until December 2025. At that meeting, commissioners discussed an increase from $1 per year to $180,000 per year.
The group also aims to remind the commissioners to uphold the Josephine County charter which, in its Finance chapter, stipulates that the board shall provide for the support and maintenance of the library
