The Illinois Valley FFA Club is more than just an extracurricular activity; it’s a launching pad for leadership, community engagement and career success. Led by advisor Shelbie Mason and President Kaitlyn White, the club is a shining example of what can be achieved when students are empowered to take charge.
Mason, a sixth-year teacher and FFA advisor, is passionate about the program’s ability to provide hands-on learning experiences in agriculture, leadership, and personal growth. “FFA is not just about farming,” she emphasized. “It’s about teaching the next generation how to provide for themselves, think critically and develop essential life skills.”
As a solely student-run organization, the I.V. FFA Club relies on its members to take ownership of decision-making, event planning and community outreach. Mason highlights the benefits of this approach, saying, “FFA builds leadership skills, shapes well-rounded adults and teaches career success and personal growth.”
The club’s activities are diverse and engaging, ranging from annual events like the April 11 dinner and silent auction to competitions in food science, ag sales, public speaking and more. Members can also participate in plant science, floriculture, vet science and other courses, all designed to provide a comprehensive education in agriculture and related fields.
For students who may be hesitant to join due to lack of experience or farming background, White, a senior and club president, said, “Don’t not join because you’re scared. Everyone is very welcoming, and you’ll find that FFA is not just about farming, it’s very science-related, and anything can be tied back to agriculture.”
One of the club’s most notable achievements is its ability to bring together students from different backgrounds and interests. White stated, “Even if they’re not from your chapter everyone is very kind in the FFA community.” She also said there is something for everyone to enjoy with Ms. Mason’s help and no matter your interests it’s very fulfilling and educational for everyone involved and is setting them up for a more enriching future.
As the I.V. FFA Club continues to thrive, it’s understandable that its impact extends far beyond the classroom. This remarkable group of students is shaping a brighter future for themselves and their community. Kyle Porter, an FFA officer and sophomore at IVHS said, “FFA gives you so many connections to career opportunities and chances to make friends and connect with your peers.”
It’s clear after talking to this group that the program is very beneficial. To learn more about the Illinois Valley FFA Club or get involved, contact advisor Shelbie Mason, President Kaitlyn White, or student counselor Crystal Welch by calling IVHS at 541-592-2116.
