Hello from the Illinois Valley Country Club golf course!
I missed reporting the winner of the Men’s Twilight League last week, it was Mike, Tyler, John Nolan and their daughter/sister’s husband Braden of the Kerby Electric company. They beat out Troy & D’Lynn Roach and Tyler & Chaise Robbins of the Waldamar Ranch. It was quite the battle and a few ties were made so they ended up playing quite a few matches to decide upon the winner. Pretty fun stuff!
A couple of weeks ago, we had a little glow ball match on Friday evening with seven teams competing. We played 18 holes, starting at 6 before sundown and then converting to glow balls once it got dark. I arrived after dark and was told to find Todd and Dave’s team. We ended up with 11 players on our tee box, so it was a little confusing once we arrived at the green. But, it was fun trying to decide who’s red ball belonged to whom and who the heck is playing this light green ball? It was after midnight when we finished and I’m not positive that we even decided who won, but the little twinkly glow balls up the sky, the laughter and good-natured teasing and the warm evening were a wonderful memory for all of us.
The big news this week was the eighth annual Calcutta tournament. We had eight teams enter, for a total of 32 players, coming from Cave Junction, Holland Loop, Selma, Kerby, Applegate, Grants Pass, Eugene, Junction City and Springfield. Mike and Kendyl came from Shadow Hills Club outside of Junction City and helped us to put the technical details together, keeping score, Calcutta betting and generally being very helpful, much thanks to them again. We started the weekend with a little two-person Alternating shot skins game for $25 per team on Friday evening to get things going. The large pot was split with Megan and Dave winning two skins and D’Lynn and Ty winning one. After the skins we met on the patio to enjoy a really nice taco bar dinner delivered from Pappy’s Pub by Casey Taylor. During the auction, D’Lynn’s team sold for a highest bid of $2,100.
The auction made for a Calcutta pool totaling $9,600, not too shabby for only eight teams.
Saturday’s play resulted in a tie for first gross score between Dave Muswieck, Mike Modrich, Huey and Roger Hults, tied with Steve and Jim Taormino, Jordan Brown and Jakob White. Billy Hults, John Sloan, Dustin Henderson and I won first net. We had a nice ribeye steak dinner again made up by Casey and cooked by Buddy, and complete with blueberry cobbler, (Buddy’s specialty). A bunch of us met out by the travel trailers, sharing stories until the wee hours of the morning (actually only 1, as we are all old now and only the kids stay up till morning anymore).
The second day, Roger’s team was far and away the undisputed gross score, with a 12 under par 60. Todd Johan, Dan Day, David Scott and Jesse Cross were low net on Sunday. The combined tow-day totals showed Roger’s team at low gross and Jeffry Nichols, Kendyl Modrich, Hunter Bhan and Matt Solomon won first net for a payout of $3,550 for each team. My team missed winning low net by having John’s putt on #6 go into the hole, disappear and somehow spin its way back up the side and miraculously barely roll up and out the top, a feat that none of us had ever seen. We settled for a second low net and collected $1,550. The course kept a nice $950 from the Calcutta pool to go toward an insurance premium payment this fall. Megan Clady ran the beverage wagon for us and drove around and around the course with that stylin ride for all day Saturday and the same on Sunday. Many thanks from all the players to Megan for being there when we most needed some refreshment.
Other notables include Meghan Taormino, the only other lady golfer, who endured having the other all-girl teams cancel but braved playing with the guys. She did collect a long drive for a few bucks and earned the admiration of the players. Also, thanks to Eugene, Denis and Marc for their awesome work on getting the greens punched, healed and mowed and rolled to make them fast and true.
**Next event will be the Men’s Club Championship.
**And remember, kids 17 and younger always play for free at IVCC.
