Freedom to Worship
I once saw a sign while driving that pointed to a notable sight: the smallest church in America.
My curiosity was aroused. I followed the sign and soon found the parking area for this unusual sanctuary. I discovered that America’s smallest church sits nicely in a beautiful park, surrounded by well-kept lawn, blooming flowers, and plenty of shade trees. Located on U.S. 219, near Thomas, West Virginia, it is adorned with stained glass windows, and has a small steeple with a belltower.
I stepped inside the front door into a miniature vestibule that had a register in which to record my visit, and some pictures and information about the church. Built in 1958 by Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Milkint, in honor of their parents, it measures 16’ x 11’ on the inside where there are six pews providing seating for 12. With many handmade decorations, it is obvious that plenty of care went into designing this sacred space.
Regular services are held in the spring and summer. It isn’t unusual for 500-600 to stop by for a Sunday visit. In a recent year, over 37,000 from 48 states and 17 countries visited.
Whether your church is large or small, remember to thank God for the privilege of worship. Our country has been blessed with religious freedom and we can attend any church we choose. This is a great opportunity that we should not take for granted
