Happy Labor Day from the Illinois Valley Country Club as I am writing this on Labor Day.
I started the weekend by planning and taking part in my son Max’s burial service. We decided to have it early in the morning as the family grave plot is on the Western side of the hill at Laurel Cemetery and gets a good dose of heat in the afternoons. Sonny Moore did a real nice service and added his personal thoughts and feelings at the end, very sensitive and meaningful for all in attendance.
We had signed up for the Applegate Golf glow ball tournament a few months prior so Tracy picked me up from the park, where I was entertaining Grey and Ash and we headed off in the afternoon. We took four teams from IV. I played with Tracy, David Scott and Jamie; Todd brought Randy and Donny from IV and got the other Randy from Applegate; D’Lynn brought Troy, Poke and Ty; and Dustin had Roger, Brad and Megan. Tracy invited Kristine and Marc from Wilderville and Chris and Larry from Central Point so both teams were made up of couples. D’Lynn’s team won the low gross score for all teams and my team got the lowest score for the B flight, as we had a mixed gender team. We played 9 holes in the evening before the sun went down and then ate a nice dinner and then went back out after dark and watched the pretty glowing balls flying all over the course sky. I lost my first two balls on the first two holes so Tracy had to replenish my supply with some that she had saved from the IV tournament that we had last year. We will be having our own glow ball this coming Friday night.
We finally got in bed at around 2 in the morning and Dave Muswieck made us Mimosas for breakfast the next morning. Then the four of us went back out for another 9 holes. We were surprised that we hit a better score in the morning after being up so very late. That last 9 holes was very exhausting but we sure had a fun time. After all that, I went out to see Max’s two young daughters and finally made it home by about 1:30 in the morning, to chalk up another late night.
Then this morning, we met up with golf carts for the Labor Day Parade. D’Lynn and Poke rode in the cart that he bought from Jason Gill; Scott and Sue drove the Workhorse; Tracy and Taylor took her cream puff cart; David and Jamie took his pretty lime-green cart; Losey and his daughter rode in his really nice Yamaha; Emily drove the beverage cart; and I got stuck with the purple gas cart that smoked like crazy all the way through town. David had a couple grocery bags full of candy and would stop his cart, scoop out about 4 lbs and dump the candy on top of the anxiously awaiting tots. Some group handed out popsicles and about 20% of the crowds on the sidelines were eating popsicles as we paraded past.
