The Jr program wrapped up with a nice little tournament on Thursday. The heat was brutal but the kids all braved it marvelously. We had about 35 kids out there with ages from 4 all the way up to about 12. Plenty of parents were on hand and smiling kids walked around with their little completion certificates, Greyson was super proud of his 3rd place sticker on his. Casey brought down pizzas from Pappy’s Pub and a couple of us parents braved serving the ice cream which, believe it or not, was rock hard.
The ladies were out on the course in 3 groups on Thursday and looked to be having a good time. I was watering fairways all evening and trying to space the sprinklers far enough so that they could easily play through and around them. They finished well before darkness which is not usually the case– hope they don’t take offense! So I was able to get a good set of water down on the struggling greens. One day we will for sure get all of the greens’ sprinklers adjusted right so that the dry areas are wet and the wet areas are not soaked.
On Friday we had 6 couples come out to compete in a little $5 per team, 2-person scramble. Scott and Sue showed up for the first time and all the girls were dressed in cute golf outfits. Rowdy and Deva split the $30 pot with Scottie and Kenny (we don’t require different gender couples and you need not be romantically involved with your partner, see…).
We also had a nice little tournament last Saturday in memory of Jesse Swift and Mighty. We had 12 teams enter and played 9 holes of four-person scramble. We sold Mulligans and what we call “the toss”, in which a team can elect to have one player toss the ball, it does not count as a stroke and it usually is used when a team is really in a good position so scores can go really low in this format. Winners were Joel, Jakob, David and Jamie, second was a tie between Me, Todd, John and Matt, and Luke, Graham, Dustin and Osul. Buddy brought us Taylor dogs to soak up the Pendleton that we all shared with Ken Swift on the #8 teebox as a special moment to remember the kids. My team got paired up with Rhino and Victoria Prince and they were making “content” for Victoria’s Instagram page, which was interesting all in itself.
And finally, this past weekend, we took a small group over to Centennial Golf course for their annual Sasquatch tournament. This is a really competitive tournament with a huge amount of prize money up for grabs. The big money winner this year was a young fella from the Korn Ferry Tour and he split a $6000 splash for cash prize and won about $2000 from the tournament itself. We took Me, John, Todd and David for our team. D’Lynn had Poke, Ty, Troy and Dave Muswieck. Nate from Applegate took Dustin, Roger Demoy, Gerry and Paul Miller drove up from Utah. We also chatted with Roger Hults and his team from Dutcher Creek and got to catch up with a bunch of other friends and acquaintances over the three day tournament. John had an interesting drive on #1 in which he swung very hard but hit the top of the ball with the sole of the clubhead. We couldn’t see the ball fly at all and the four of us were looking around the sides of the fairway. I thought that the ball would not have gone past the end of the teebox and I looked and could see an indentation just in front of his tee. The ball had buried itself completely under the thick grass just an inch beyond his tee! We laughed and laughed, especially David… well, fate smiles in funny ways because, on #10 teebox, David did the same thing but his ball dug into the turf immediately in front of his tee and then bounced backward, giving him a minus 3-inch drive. John got the last laugh. John also won a skin, with a birdie (net Eagle) on #10, for which the entry fee was $20. The skin paid him $350. Everyone shared how beat they all were on Monday but we all made it to work!
Next tournament is the annual Jay Miller Memorial on Aug 24th, it’s a 4 person scramble and a ton of fun with a bunch of Miller family competing.
And remember, kids 17 and younger always play for free at IVCC.
