Tales from the Rural Patrol

(Editor’s note: Factual information for ‘Tales’ is provided by the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office. All persons listed are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Charges can be amended or dismissed.)

July 5
*An employee at a business in the 5000 block of Monument Drive called the boys in blue to report that a customer had cut the hose off of a fire extinguisher. When confronted, Richard Smith, 31, told them he “needed the hose to fix his car.” Smith, a California resident, was arrested on charges of property damages and on not knowing how to work on cars.
*Brandon Miranda, 19, was really going for it when the fuzz caught up with him on Redwood Hwy and Watkins St going 77 mph in a 30 mph zone. He was cited for having no operator’s license, and presumably, speeding. He was released to a person who had a valid license.
*At a private graveyard, it was found two men were sleeping in a car on the sacred grounds. Both men were trespassed from the Foothill Blvd area cemetery for one year, and Shelby Acosta, 33, was served a warrant for parole violation and attempted assault.
*A red pickup truck was noticed by an officer to have no license plates, leading to a traffic stop. Anthony Pope, 39, was warned that if he didn’t acquire insurance and registration, his vehicle would be towed if pulled over again.
*A vehicle was contacted at the intersection of Watkins and Hussy with switched license plates, no registration, and no proof of insurance. The man was cited, and agreed to stay with the vehicle at the church until his mom could come get the car.
*An animal complaint was made in the 100 block of Dvon Dr. A neighbor had pictures of four dogs running loose in the neighborhood. They were vaccinated, but the deputy explained to them how to obtain licenses for the pooches. Any future evidence of them running off-property will lead to a citation. Lisa Long will get her citation redacted if proper licensing is obtained, and her son, Douglas Williams was cited on one count of K9 public nuisance.

A driver, once again was warned that his vehicle would be impounded if caught driving while suspended or having an expired registration. Edward McWest,57, left his vehicle on the road.
July 6
*After dangerously passing on the right, speeding 90 mph in a 65 mph, and failure to maintain his lane, Luis Gonzalez, 57, got off with a warning. A lucky day for this Oklahoma driver.
*A person complained for the second time that a bicycle rider was letting his pit bull run loose next to him in Riverside Park. The complainant said they had yelled at him in the past while walking their leashed dog, and did it again today. The heat caught up with him when he was contacted by deputies near his residence. He admitted to being at the park, getting yelled at, knew he was in trouble, and to just give him a ticket, but you can’t always get what you want. He was merely advised on leash and licensing laws.
*A welfare check was made after an animal complaint in the 5000 block of Jerome Prairie Rd. The woman contacted, Letecia Christine Rios, explained to the officer that she had rescued a small dog in March who had open sores and was missing hair. After showing them the dog, whose hair had grown back, had no more open sores, and looked happy and healthy. She then showed them the many shaded shelters, lots of water available, and even the type of food she fed them. It was determined to be an unfounded complaint. Great job helping our little furry friends, Letecia!
*A motorcycle rider appeared to be trying to ditch the 5-0, but stuck in one gear. After veering off onto a gravel road and running from the bike in the 5000 block of Coyote Creek. Daniel Green, 42, was captured and jailed on attempting to elude. It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear, when it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year.
*A female wouldn’t leave a residence in 200 Long Acres Rd area, then left, but then came back again screaming profanities and racial slurs. She then squatted at the end of the driveway preventing anyone from leaving the residence. Apparently, she has been quite the nuisance for many days. Gail Shettlesworth, 61, was trespassed and detained on charges of disorderly conduct.

*A speeding ticket was given to a driver on Redwood Hwy and Laurel Rd for going 60mph in a 30mph zone.
*Michael C. Young, 60, got a citation for driving while suspended and having no visible plates near Robertson Bridge Rd.
*Lots of citations this week, including 24-year-old Juan Valdovinos, who got popped carrying no license or insurance.
*Around the 4000 block of Foothill Blvd, Amanda Atkinson, 45, was ticketed for going 62mph in a 45mph.
*After a 911 hang-up call, a welfare check led to detainment of an extremely high or intoxicated man who was nodding off and making jerky movements. Jacob Priest, 35, was leaning over the bridge and attempting to swim. He was then found slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle, where he was woken up and taken into custody.

July 7

*Two separate traffic citations were issued on Junction Ave and Monument Dr for reasons unknown.
*Luey Glenn, 35, was uncooperative with the law when approached near the bottle drop at Shop Smart. He was eventually arrested on a parole violation for indecent exposure to minors and adults. No bail.
*A patrol check 2 miles up W. Pickett Creek Rd found three people camped illegally, and all three were cited for littering. They were given until Friday to vacate the premises.

July 8
*Possible PTSD may have led to a highly intoxicated woman trying to enter a residence, then hanging and climbing on a railing. She was screaming at the residents, and screaming at the dog to shut up. She was jailed for trespassing, but the reporting person did not want to press charges against 35-year-old Brittany Boyton.
*Twenty-seven-year-old Austin Gibson waited at the Josephine County Jail lobby to turn himself on a failure to appear charge for a duii.
*A head-on collision in the 1500 block of Lakeshore Dr which led to minor injuries could have been a lot worse. Unfortunately, the driver of a Tundra was bleeding from their leg and foot, and suffered a broken ankle. Both drivers were on scene, and OSP was called in to assist. IVFD had to perform a heavy extrication, and vehicles were blocking the road. Both vehicles wee towed, and one person was arrested. That’s all I got.

July 9
*A warrant was served to Kory Russell, 36, for failure to appear on criminal trespass on NE F St.
*A speeder was cited for going 75mph in a 45mph on Rogue River Hwy.
*A brief pursuit with a motorcycle hitting speeds of over 100mph on Merlin Rd and Merlin Ave ended with the rider stopping. He had a pistol, though it was licensed, was still detained the motorcycle was impounded.

July 10
*Justin Taylor, 36, returned to the CJ Shop Smart after being trespassed many times. He claimed he just wanted a cigarette lighter, but admitted he knew he wasn’t supposed to be there. Talyor was arrested for trespassing.
*Up on Cheney Creek, a man found a stranger in his guest house who claimed to live there and was just taking care of the horses. He appeared to be on drugs and was told by the property owner to sit down near the mailbox until LE showed up. The perp tried to get up, but was told to stay down. Christopher Thomas Sanguino Palmer, 27, was cuffed and thrown in the paddy wagon on charges of burglary, attempted theft, trespassing, and criminal mischief.
*A female in a white Subaru was clocked at 108 mph in the block of 23000 Redwood Hwy.
*John D. Nolen, 26, was arrested after putting his hands over a 3-year-old’s mouth in attempts to quiet them and get them to sleep. The scared child attempted to push the much larger adult male Nolen away, but was unsuccessful, obviously. John then grabbed the 3-year-old’s arms and violently shook the baby. The child ended up with multiple bruises and finger sized welts to the arm and face. John Nolen did admit to doing these things, but that still don’t make it right. He was charged with criminal mistreatment, strangulation, and assault II.
