James “Jimmy” Allison Stanton was born April 20, 1949, to Edwin Joseph Stanton and his wife Jean Hatfield Stanton, died June 21, 2024, in Cave Junction, Oregon.
Jimmy lived a simple, nomadic lifestyle. His life was filled with adventure following his music. He was an excellent drummer and toured with bands, including The Platters and Eddy Money. He performed throughout the country and recorded and composed music on several albums, including “Red Hot” with Cave Junction music producer Marty Bolin. Jimmy wrote about his adventures living and playing drums in Guyana in his book, “Suns of God: Miracles among Mortals.”
Jimmy’s entire life was about drumming, writing music and being happy. He began mowing lawns at the age of 6 to get money for his first snare drum. He was in the Lake Air Junior High and Richfield High bands in Waco, Texas, receiving awards for his talent. He studied with Dr. VanLandingham at Baylor University and began playing clubs, dances, and events with bands in his teens. He was still actively playing with a classic rock band in Cave Junction.
Jimmy is survived by his three sons: Thomas (Florida), Jamie (New Hampshire) and Barrington (New York); his sister, Cathy Stanton Holm (Montgomery, Texas), brother, Edwin J. Stanton (Lubbock, Texas); cousins; nieces and nephews; and a crowd of friends and acquaintances.
We will miss his charisma, humor, and antics. A Celebration of the Life of Jimmy Stanton was held at the home of Cathy Stanton Holm in Montgomery, Texas. A music celebration for friends will be held in the Cave Junction this summer.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to the Fellowship of Montgomery Music Fund in Jimmy’s name at 12681 FM 149, Montgomery, Texas 77316 (936) 597-3949.
