The Lorna Byrne Middle School wrestling team opened up its season with successful home meets against Scenic last week.
Although official team scores were not kept for the match, The Vikings won 10 of the 19 matches wrestled. Eight of Lorna Byrne’s 10 wins in the match came by way of pin.
Among the boys’ matches, Donald Lee, Trevor Langdon, Jesse Conn, Cory Davis and Ryder Sauer all dominated their opponents and registered pins.
Taygen Boze and Brody Rasmussen each wrestled twice for the Vikings. Boze lost his first match by one point in overtime, but came back to pin his second opponent to post a 1-1 mark on the night.
Rasmussen also went 1-1, pinning his first opponent before losing on points in his second match.
Colten Webb also won his match, scoring a decision over his Scenic opponent.
On the girls’ side, Layla Fox was a winner for the Vikings. Fox pinned her opponent in the second round. Lizzie Riolo also had her hand raised for Lorna Byrne, scoring a 7-2 win over her opponent.
The Vikings wrestled a double-dual meet at Eagle Point with Eagle Point and White Mountain Middle Schools last week as well. Results of those matches were not reported to the Illinois Valley News prior to the deadline.
Lorna Byrne will wrestle two more times this week. The Vikings travel to Cascade Christian for a double dual with Cascade Christian and McLoughlin early in the week. On Thursday the grapplers head to Talent Middle School for a double dual with Talent and Ashland.
