The team traveled to Portland Friday and Saturday to participate in the elite Reser’s Tournament of Champions. This is a “invite only” tournament featuring all the top teams in the state of Oregon.
Head coach Gene Griffin posted pictures on Facebook and wrote how proud he was of his team. He also expressed appreciation to his wrestlers for their 100% effort and sportsmanship against the toughest competition of the season.
Due to some injuries the Cougars sent only seven varsity and three junior varsity wrestlers to the event. Senior Ryan Griffin (third place) and JV freshman Garrett White (fourth place) came home with the first two metals ever awarded to an I.V. wrestler.
The competition was unbelievable! For example: Griffin won 5 of 6 matches including over 3A’s #5, 4A’s #3 and 5A’s #6. His only loss of the season was in the semi final by a score of 1-0! James Conn lost his first 2 of the season, first to 6A’s #3 (a match in which his nose was broken), then he put on a mask and beat 5A’s #5 before losing to 5A’s #2. Mike Miller won twice and lost twice, to the 4A’s #2 and 6A’s #2 (a record of 32-4). Talen Shaffer won twice and lost to 6A’s #1 (40-1) and 5A’s #4. Jozia Williams won twice and lost to 5A’s #11 and 4A’s #2. Kaiden Green won twice before losing to 5A’s #1 (32-2) and 6A’s #13. Ethan Green wrestled hard but lost to 6A’s #1 (37-3) and 6A’s #8 (19-4).
It was a great showing from a great group of wrestlers. They all hope they get another chance next year.
The girls team is down to three wrestlers due to injuries. Those girls, Jozy Clark, Morgan Melton and Breanna Reed all took second place at the Rogue Valley Championships to help I.V. to a seventh place finish.
The boys go to Gold Beach this Saturday to compete in the Panther Coastal Clash. This is the final tournament of the season prior to Districts. Come out and see this team if you get a chance!
