The Lorna Byrne Boys’ basketball team continued their successful season with a 33-20 win over Valley last week in the Jamie Scott Memorial Gym. The win moved the Viking cagers to 6-1 on the year.
The home game Wednesday scheduled against Glendale was canceled at Glendale’s request. As a result, the Vikings only played once last week.
Mason Tincher and Rye Anderson each scored four points in the opening quarter as Lorna Byrne took a 12-5 lead to start the game. The Vikings turned their attention to defense in the second quarter holding Valley to a single field goal while building a 20-7 halftime lead.
Teamwork was key after the intermission as four different Vikings scored in building a 27-12 lead after three periods had been played. Lorna Byrne emptied the bench in the final quarter and got a little bit of a scare when Valley cut the lead to single digits. But Tincher re-entered the game and scored four consecutive points to give the Vikings their cushion back and coast to the win.
Tincher led all scorers with 12 points in the game. Anderson finished with six points. Brandon Porter, Ever Ponder and River Lahey all chipped in four points a piece. Carson Bracht, who has led the team in scoring in several games, was held to one point, but was a monster on the boards and played outstanding defense.
The Lorna Byrne “B” squad also defeated Valley, 39-30 in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated. The Vikings outscored Valley 14-8 in the final quarter to turn a tight game into a comfortable one. The Lorna Byrne “B” team is also 6-1 on the year after their win last week.
Boaz Connell led the Viking B squad with 14 points in the game. Jeremy Hohm-Hurst pitched in 11 and Kelvin Williams also hit double figures with 10.
Both teams are scheduled to conclude their seasons this week with home games against St. Mary’s and Sacred Heart/Madrone.
