The Illinois Valley wrestlers went to the Dan Vidlak tournament last weekend and dominated a field of upper-class opponents. They carried home five first places, four second places, one each for a third, fourth and fifth. They shut down the event with three locals in the running for placement.
Our champions (all 2023 state qualifiers) were: James Conn (106), Mike Miller (113), Micah Martinho (120), Talen Shaffer (126) and Ryan Griffen (157). Second place finishers were: returning lettermen Ethan Green (144) and Jozia Williams (165) and two freshmen, Hunter Box (113) and Kaiden Holbrook (126). Our third-place finisher was Devon Peters (132). Fourth place went to Grit Charitram (120) and fifth was another promising freshman Garrett White (120). It was an outstanding performance by our team!
The scorekeepers showed I.V. in fifth place, which is not possible with five champions in 14 weight classes. Trackwrestling showed South Medford in first place with 296 points. I personally went through all the scoring (which I do know how to do) and everyone’s score is correct except, somehow, they lost 89 points that the I.V. scored, which puts our first-place total at 342.5 (just my opinion)!
This week the team has a four-team tournament at North Valley High School tonight and a big tournament at Culver High School Friday and Saturday. All our local fans know that Culver is an arch-rival, so come out, support the team and make a lot of noise!
