Obituaries

Theodore Richard “Ted” Nichols, 95, of Rogue River, died October 2, 2023 at his home.
Ted was born May 7, 1928 at Powers, Oregon to Quimby Ozzie Nichols & Wilma Mae (Lee) Nichols. He attended one-room schools in Union Town and Ruch. In his early working years, he was a cat skinner and was most happy being on the ‘cat.’ He also fought fires for the Forest Service. He later worked for Croman Corporation making heliport landings for fire suppression. He lived in the Applegate Valley, Kelso, Washington, Butte Falls and Jacksonville, Oregon, Fort Bragg, California and Cave Junction until moving to Rogue River in 2006.
Ted loved to hunt and from his hunting supplied three families with meat throughout the year. He was known for being a ‘sharpshooter.’ His other hobbies included fishing, traveling, BBQing, going out to eat, and prospecting for gold.
Ted’s memberships included North American Hunting Club and the National Rifle Association.
Ted was always willing to help out anyone, especially if they were moving.
Survivors include several stepchildren including stepdaughter Claire Ann Newshafer; brother Marion Nichols; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four wives Elsie Josephine, Melva, Nanine, and Betty; sons Richard Theodore Nichols and Robert Wayne Nichols; sisters Ellen, Loraine, Natalie and Marge; and his parents.
A Private burial will be at Laurel Cemetery in Cave Junction.
A celebration of life will be held in May 2024.
