Standing True to God
In the early 1800’s, Alexis de Tocqueville visited our young country to learn the secret of her greatness. Later, he wrote: “I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers…in her fertile fields and boundless forests… in her rich mines and her vast world commerce…in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution…[but] it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great.”
Nearly 250 years later we wonder, “Has America ceased to be good?” God gave a warning to the young nation of Israel nearly 1,500 years before Christ telling them, “When you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God… You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth… If you ever forget the Lord your God… I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed” (Deuteronomy 8:12-19).
Our nation’s founders stood strong in the Lord. Carved above the entrance to the Supreme Court and on all our currency are the words, “In God We Trust.” They trusted God and relied wholly upon Him for everything. But you’d never know it today.
Up until 1962, many school children started their school day with a prayer. But the United States Supreme Court decided that this violated the establishment clause of the First Amendment, and they removed prayer from our public schools. Later, they took out the Ten Commandments and today a public schoolteacher would be afraid to recite the Lord’s Prayer or read the 23rd Psalm in the classroom for fear of losing their job. But that same teacher can tell your child where to get a condom, or an abortion, or sexual reassignment surgery without your consent or knowledge, and without any repercussions.
God and prayer have been exorcised from our children’s education. Is there any wonder why there’s so much violence across our land? Right and wrong has been reduced to moral relativism. Absolute truth has been reduced to ‘my truth’. We, as a nation, have moved away from that “firm reliance on the protection of divine providence.” We have forgotten God.
But it’s time to turn back and remember Him. It’s time to stand strong in Him again if we want to see this nation restored. God can accomplish America’s restoration as long as we’re willing stand true to God.
