From the mayor’s desk: Guest edition by Parks & Rec Chair John Miles

Thank you Mayor Martell for allowing the Parks & Recreation Commission the opportunity to use this space.
Every first Thursday of each month, the Cave Junction Parks and Recreation Commission meets at 7 p.m. We would love to have more public participation. You will find our meetings announced in the Illinois Valley News and on the city’s website at cavejunctionoregon.us.
First, the good news! We intend to have our spray pad operating this summer! The spray equipment that will be embedded in the concrete has arrived and will be installed this spring. The above ground fun play fixtures are being made by the manufacturer and will arrive in time to be mounted when the spray pad and concrete is complete. This construction schedule is subject to the weather, but we hope to announce a grand opening sometime late spring.
The playground is also being expanded with three new pieces of ADA playground equipment as well as a new cushioned surface that will be installed to replace the degrading bark chips. To accomplish this, the playground and the area around it will be closed for several weeks during construction but we will coordinate the work so the playground is closed for a little time as possible.
Once these major tasks are completed, the Parks and Recreation Commission will be focused on replacing at least one of the restrooms with a fully ADA accessible restroom. Next will be designing and installing a second ball field.
A Parks and Recreation Master Plan was completed in 2017. You can view the Plan on the city’s website under “Planning.” The Commission is interested in knowing if the community has additional input for improvements or activities you would like to see for our parks that aren’t currently referenced in the master plan. If you have ideas, please mail them to PO Box 1396, Cave Junction, OR 97523. You can also drop off your ideas off at City Hall or email them to CJParkCommission@cavejunctionoregon.us. Ideas shared will be reflected in our upcoming newspaper columns.
We are looking forward to hearing your ideas. For now, have fun playing outdoors.
