Airport’s Davis is cleared for takeoff

Josephine County Airports Director Jason Davis has tendered his resignation and is expected to depart his role Feb. 25, though Board of JoCo Commissioners Chair Herman Baertschiger indicated Davis may stay on longer if the county cannot recruit a replacement by then.
Davis, who assumed his post in the spring of 2021 to replace former Airports Director Larry Graves and served as deputy airports director prior to that, was offered full-throated praise by Baertschiger at the board’s Jan. 25 meeting, held at Anne G. Basker Auditorium in Grants Pass.
“(Jason’s and my) relationship has been pretty close, even before I was a commissioner, and so he has had a pretty long conversation of why he’s decided to leave,” said Baertschiger. “I can’t elaborate on that, because I don’t have his permission to, but I will tell you one thing: The county can’t meet what he has found.”
Baertschiger added that Davis received a 7.6% increase in pay after the departure of his administrative assistant earlier in the month, but this did not sway his decision. The administrative assistant position remained open as of the Jan. 25 meeting.

“He’s awesome,” Baertschiger said of Davis. “If I was still in business, and I’m not now, but if I was, I’d be trying to steal him from the county. His work ethics are just unbelievable.”

Baertschiger and his fellow Commissioner John West voted to initiate recruitment for the airport director position Jan. 25. Commissioner Dan DeYoung was absent from the meeting.

Following the vote, Baertschiger stated Davis is “onto greener pastures”.

“That guy is so accommodating; it’s unbelievable,” the board chair concluded. “It’s gonna be a real loss to Josephine County.”
