I.V. wrestlers gearing up for State

The Illinois Valley High School boys wrestling team improved their dual record to 10-1 last Wednesday with a 72-6 victory over Phoenix that included 10 forfeits. Talen Shaffer pinned his opponent in 4:46 to improve his record to 17-12.
Ryon Martinho pinned his opponent in 57 seconds to improve to 25-4. The boys returned from the Oregon Classics in Redmond with the second place trophy. Senior Ryon Martinho, who placed third (third and second previously at state) led the Cougars with a 5-0 record.
Junior two-time defending state champion Mike Miller was 5-1; sophomore defending state champ Micah Martinho was a perfect 4-0; while senior Ebyn Lyndsey was 4-1. The final home dual against Hidden Valley was Jan. 24 and their last season tournament will be in Monroe against 16 teams Saturday, Jan. 28. Then, it’s on to districts Feb. 10 and 11 in Lowell.
Finally, the state championships, in which they finished at second place last year, will be held in Portland, Feb. 23 and 24.
Coach Clark says their goal is to bring the first state wrestling championship in the I.V. High School history home Feb. 25.
The I.V. girls program began its first year with a squad of seven wrestlers. Charai Miller leads the team with 5 wins. Kaitlyn White, Sarah White and Morgan Melton are close behind with 4 wins apiece. Their final season tournament is the Rogue Valley Invitational in North Medford Jan. 28. The girls district and state tournaments are at the same time as the boys.
